CAPTAIN HUGH JAMES
Hello, I'm Captain Hugh. I'm proud of my southern roots and born with a yearning to be on the water. So it seems odd that I would be born in the largest city in the United States, not on a navigable waterway, Atlanta. I spent my childhood in Louisville, Kentucky, then most of my early adult life in Lexington where I enjoyed sailing and water skiing with friends.
In 1991, I moved to Naples, Florida where I continued my affection for the water by working around it in every way possible. In '95 I acquired my U.S. Coast Guard Captains license. Then I began working for Sailboats Unlimited, taking folks sailing in the Gulf of Mexico and to the Florida Keys for not only sailing but also snorkeling and scuba diving. In the summer we moved the company flagship to Panama City, Florida to share a wonderful experience of swimming with wild dolphins. I feel there is no creature on earth as special as the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.
By 1997 I was also running a 40 foot power catamaran doing dolphin/nature cruises. In 2004 I became Senior Captain for the Cocohatchee Nature Center in North Naples. Our trips were on a 40 foot, 42 passenger catamaran (sound familiar?) where our goal was to explore the natural estuaries of Southwest Florida in search of dolphins. I found that dolphins can be so friendly they would often find us.
This brings me to my family oriented move to the area of the Grand Strand. While preparing for the move, in the spring of 2010, I did some research to find out who was doing the type of dolphin/nature cruises that would place folks closest to dolphins and the natural ecosystem of the Carolinas. This led me to Getaway Adventures. Meeting the owners, Katie and Bryan, was enough to convince me that this was the organization that suited my needs. Not only were they my kind of people but they share my desire to bring Mother Nature's wonders to folks in search of a grand experience. Needless to say we all hit it off well and I am so pleased to be a part of the Getaway Adventures team. Come and let us share our adventure with you.
